FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: September 13, 2021

Female Swimmer Missing in Lake Travis Recovered

At 4:36 pm on September 6, 2021, TCSO and other agencies responded to a report of a missing swimmer in Lake Travis near Hurst Creek. According to witnesses, two couples with boating experience, rented a sailboat. A female decided to go swimming near the boat. She began to struggle in the water and was not able to reach a life jacket that was nearby, tethered to the boat. A male passenger jumped in the water, attempting to rescue her, but was unable to help her before she went under.

Attempts to locate and rescue the missing swimmer were unsuccessful and the nature of the call became a recovery. TCSO searched for the missing woman, conducting shoreline, surface and aerial (drone) searches, and using various types of sonar and a remotely operated underwater camera (ROC).

On September 11, 2021, the missing woman was located via ROC and recovered from a depth of 124 feet. An autopsy has been conducted and final results are pending. Out of respect for the family involved, and because this is not a criminal incident, TCSO will not disclose the identity of the decedent via press release.

TCSO continues to search for a swimmer reported missing the evening of August 7, 2021. The missing man was reportedly last seen in an area between Starnes Island and North Shore. That area of the lake is over 120 feet deep. A total of ten swimmers have been reported missing on Lake Travis this year.
