TCSO to Fund Body Armor for its Deputies and Other County First Responders

TCSO to Fund Body Armor for its Deputies and Other County First Responders

With unanimous approval from the Travis County Commissioners Court, TCSO will purchase rifle resistant vests for all its deputies as well as for Constable Precincts One through Five, TNR Park Rangers, and Travis County Fire Marshals.

In August, 2017, Travis County failed to qualify for a statewide grant that could have provided funding for these vests. In the months that followed, TCSO staff members sought alternate funding.

On January 9th, the Commissioners Court approved item 16, a contract awarding the operation of kitchens at TCSO’s correctional facilities to Aramark Corrections Services, LLC. This new contract was expected to result in significant cost savings, to be applied to cover overtime associated with a full-time Basic Peace Officer Course.

TCSO realized an additional one-time savings of approximately $200,000 from selling on-hand food inventory to Aramark. TCSO asked Commissioners to approve the reallocation of the funds generated by this sale from the Corrections Food & Groceries budget to Law Enforcement Supplies and Equipment for the procurement of rifle resistant vests.

In her presentation to Commissioners, Sheriff Sally Hernandez stressed the imperative that we protect the women and men who protect our communities.
