TCSO Deputies Receive Swift Water SCUBA Training

TCSO Deputies Receive Swift Water SCUBA Training

In past years, TCSO has had deputies trained in still water rescue, but not swift water. That all changed this month as members of the agency’s dive team participated in training at Fathom Academy in Austin. While many agencies have received training from the academy, TCSO’s deputies are the first to receive Public Safety Swift Water Recovery SCUBA training.

Deputies completed the grueling week-long course at Fathom Academy’s indoor facility. They were taught, and expected to master, recovery procedures in an environment designed to replicate the intensity and chaos of swift water scenarios in both daylight and darkness.

Flash flooding is a routine occurrence in Travis County and TCSO Deputies set barricades to keep drivers from entering low water crossings. Despite the warnings, first responders still receive emergency calls to respond to motorists who have been swept into raging flood waters. This training will aid deputies in offering life-saving assistance.
