32 Vehicle Pile Up on SH 130 Overnight

At 1:06 am on January 1, 2019, deputies responded to a multi-car collision on in the 1400 block of SH 130 southbound. The collision happened during heavy fog and resulted in a chain reaction involving 32 vehicles, including two semi-trucks. 56 people were involved as drivers or passengers with 10 being transported to area hospitals.

The first deputy on the scene attempted to warn motorists approaching the area, but due to the thick fog and zero visibility, his unit was struck by several vehicles as well. He managed to quickly move away from his vehicle just before it was hit.
The Department of Public Safety, Austin Police Department, Austin EMS, Austin Fire, Travis County ESD, Austin Spill Response, Capital Metro, and the Toll Authority all assisted with this major event. The southbound toll road was shut down for approximately 7 hours while the vehicles were removed and cleanup was performed.
