Corrections Officers Receive Specialized Mental Health Training

Approximately 20 percent of the inmate population at the Travis County Correctional Complex requires treatment for mental illness. On any given day, approximately seven percent of inmates with mental illness are experiencing severe symptoms such as psychosis, delusions or suicidal thoughts.

The jail is a highly sensitive and unusual work environment that requires extensive training and a very unique skill set. It is incumbent upon the Travis County Sheriff’s Office to make every effort possible to ensure our employees are equipped to serve this vulnerable population. To that end, we are offering Corrections Officers an intensive, week-long mental health training opportunity.

The training includes 24 hours of classroom courses designed to identify various symptoms and behaviors of mental illness, and more importantly how to communicate in a manner that respects the dignity of the individual. The last 16 hours of the course involves scenario-based training in which officers engage with professional actors who play the role of an inmate in crisis. These local actors have been trained by national experts in the field of mental illness, corrections and law enforcement to provide realistic and challenging scenarios that will prepare officers for working with mentally ill individuals.
