Swimmer Who Died in Lake Travis Identified

The Travis County Sheriff’s Office Underwater Recovery Team recovered the body of JOHN PETRONE, 75, of Illinois, on Monday, June 17, 2019.

Witnesses called 911 at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 16, to report Petrone vanished in the Rough Hollow area of Lake Travis. On Sunday night, deputies used sonar, cameras, and a remotely operated underwater vehicle to search for him. The same search tools were used Monday morning. Dive Team members were able to enter the water and join the search late that morning after a storm system with lightning cleared the area.

Divers located Petrone’s body in 42 feet of water early Monday afternoon.

An investigation into the cause and manner of death is being conducted by the Travis County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Petrone is the second person to die in Lake Travis this year. Sebastian Medina-Page died on February 21, 2019, in the Hurst Creek Arm area of Lake Travis while trying to repair a broken pump at a private residence.
