Our Volunteer Program is composed of passionate citizens with a desire to partner with TCSO through their service while learning more about the internal workings of the law enforcement community.
As Travis County’s population grows, use of citizen volunteers assists us in meeting these demands and, as the demand continues to grow, so will the need for active citizen participation.
Volunteer Requirements
- Must be a law-abiding citizen with good intent.
- Must be honest on the Volunteer Application.
- Successfully pass a thorough background investigation.
- Must be at least 18 years of age, 21 for some positions.
Chaplain Services
Ministers and lay people are welcome to volunteer with our Chaplain Services. Volunteers work inside our Travis County Jail and Travis County Correctional Complex.

Community Outreach
The Community Outreach Unit (COU) is committed to fostering positive partnerships between TCSO and the communities we serve. We believe that creating and maintaining relationships built on trust and mutual respect will improve the safety and quality of life for all Travis County residents. COU volunteers will enhance existing community outreach/services and improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the agency by assisting with events and/or presentations.

Inmate Programs
More than 350 active volunteers work in our Inmate Programs, contributing to more than 10,000 hours annually. Volunteers consist of members of jail ministry, leaders of our 12-Step recovery groups as well as teachers and tutors in our educational and vocational training classes.

Internship
We do accept interns from accredited colleges and universities. We have agreements with several Texas-based schools and can accommodate students from out-of-state schools once an inter-agencies agreement is established.

Victim Services
Victim Services provides on-scene response to individuals affected by crime and crisis circumstances. Volunteers must complete a comprehensive training program and will also be accompanied on a series of calls before being cleared to take calls independently. A volunteer shift schedule allows for (4) four-hour shifts of on-call duty per month; during these shifts, volunteers must be prepared to respond to a request for assistance immediately.
